It is the most common way people ask — but square footage is actually the wrong starting point. Two 2,000-square-foot homes can need wildly different solar systems. What determines panel count is how much electricity you use, not how big your house is.
The honest answer
A typical 2,000 sq ft U.S. home uses roughly 11,000–12,000 kWh per year. To offset that you would usually need about a 7–9 kW system, which works out to roughly 18–24 panels at 400 watts each. But your real number could be half or double that depending on your bill.
Why usage matters more than size
Square footage does not run your electricity — your habits and equipment do. A 2,000 sq ft home with gas heat, modest A/C, and an efficient fridge might use 700 kWh a month. The same-size home with electric heat, a pool pump, an EV, and the A/C at 70°F could use 2,000+ kWh a month — nearly triple the panels. Always start from your actual kWh usage, printed on your electric bill.
How to calculate panel count
- Find your annual usage in kWh (add up 12 months of bills, or multiply a typical month by 12).
- Divide by your area's production ratio — how many kWh each 1 kW of panels makes per year, from about 1,200 (cloudier north) to 1,500+ (sunny southwest/Florida). That gives system size in kW.
- Divide the system watts by your panel wattage (typically 400 W) for the number of panels.
Example: 12,000 kWh/yr ÷ 1,400 = 8.6 kW. 8,600 W ÷ 400 W = ~22 panels.
